Pizza and Swimming Fun

Sant Espwa believes that the only way to break the cycle of poverty is through education.  We believe that giving children an education will give them hope for a better tomorrow.  What people don’t realize is that less than half of children in Haiti actually get to go to school because families have to pay for school.  When families are struggling to provide for just their basic needs such as food and water; school gets put on the back burner.  We want to change this, we want to provide an education to as many children that God provides resources for, we want to break the ugly cycle of poverty one child at a time!

A few weeks ago the children at CMAS took a very important exam, exams in Haiti can be very stressful because there is a lot of pressure to do well.  We decided that we wanted to reward 4 students who scored very well with a day of swimming and pizza.  The kids showed up at the school with big smiles on their faces but also a little hesitation as they weren’t quite sure what to expect!  None of the children had ever been swimming in a pool and none of them had ever had pizza. Before long we were on our way with some very excited kids in our car. The kids swam and played for several hours; the sound of their laughter and smiles made my heart skip a beat!  They enjoyed every second of their time swimming.  After a few hours we decided it was lunch time and we ordered pizza and french fries for them to try.  They all left the hotel with smiles on their faces and full bellies!

This was my last day with the kids and saying goodbye is always bittersweet.  These children have all taken a special piece of my heart. Sant Espwa has given these children more than just one day of happiness and joy, they are giving them HOPE each day they are able to go to school.
